From Cord-Cutting to Value-Adding?

IP delivered TV is now Ubiquitous and Pervasive. OTT is now a mainstream delivery mechanism, and a variety of providers: telcos, satellite broadcasters, cablecos -  are seeking to harness the interactivity and “addressability” of IP to enhance their services. This session asks: is the debate around broadband tv  evolving from cord-cutting to value-adding?

For subscription TV service providers, multiscreen and On-the-Go TV are now must-have services. Not only does IP enable these services, it also enables a sophisticated dual screen viewing experiences such as Social TV, and new promotional and advertising business models.  And it also enables App Stores to be delivered as managed or unmanaged services through Smart TVs and peripherals.

Cleary the TV market is rapidly evolving to enable a much wider range of interactive and on demand experiences. The market landscape is also changing significantly, with IP based players, such as Netflix and Google, already having significant impact, and significant further ambition.  For the CE sector, clearly these new advances services will require new partnerships and new ways of working. How will CE companies negotiate the threats and opportunities presented by this rapidly developing market?

About the IP&TV World Forum

The IP&TV World Forum is the world leading event and series on IP, Connected & Smart TV. Now in its seventh year, the event is established international meeting place for all those interested in delivering TV over IP. Our flagship global event in London brings together over 250 speakers and 6500 people from content providers, CE providers, telcos, cablecos and OTT service providers, and their suppliers.

For the first time in its seven year history, the event bore an evolved name, albeit subtly, with an ampersand now inserted between “IP” and “TV”. We believe this more accurately reflects the scope of the event, and the focus of our customers. Whilst “managed end to end telco iptv” will always remain a core focus of the series, the industry has evolved into much more. The business and technical challenges the community is currently wrestling with involve using the flexibility and addressability of IP to deliver a wide array of personalised media services. These range from Smart TVs and TV Apps, to OTT and multiplatform TV services, advanced content discovery and UI, new generations of advertising, to the connected home, and to the content delivery networks that underpin all of these.
